THE URBAN ECONOMIC RESOURCES OF HOSPITALS IN SEVILLE AT THE END OF THE MIDDLE AGES

During the Late Middle Ages the hospital network in Western Europe reached an extraordinary development. In the case of Seville this hospital expansion was very prominent, since during the late fifteenth century the city had more than a hundred centres. The objective of this study is to analyse the economic resources used by hospitals in order to carry out their activities. We have used notarial documentation, which allows us to know how these institutions were integrated in the society which they belonged to. This way, we aim to make a relevant contribution to the study of medieval and pre-modern origins of European sanitary culture.
