Mesh retopology applied to 3D models of cultural heritage for interactive visualization enhancement in Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality

The high file weight in the models of cultural heritage digitised through scanning or photogrammetry makes it necessary to develop topological reduction strategies that allow maximum optimisation of these models for their use in environments such as virtual museums or any other form of interactive visualisation. With the focus on their accessibility, this work studies the efficiency of four computer applications used for 3D model remeshing. Using a methodology based on the observation of mesh attributes, a comparative analysis of their visualisation quality is made. The research is developed through a case study in which a model is obtained and verified using the UNITY (R) 2022 1.18 videogame engine. As a result, a high visual quality is achieved with a significant improvement in viewing frequency of 55% on average over the original 3D model obtained by photogrammetry.
