Strengthening the Identity of the Counselling Profession in Indonesia

In Indonesia, the profession of counselling has a long history. Traditionally, counselling has been practiced within schools, although counsellors are beginning to practice in other contexts. However, regardless of setting, the profession has not yet established a clear and recognizable national professional identity that articulates the role of the counsellor and clearly differentiates counselling from other professions. To help create a shared national identity, the Indonesian counselling profession can implement strategies in three overarching domains: intrapersonal, intraprofessional, and interprofessional identity. Taken together, these strategies can help inform a national agenda for moving forward to create a profession that meets the needs of the Indonesian population and leads to a strong and unified national professional counsellor identity.
