Oriented Dialogue Added to Virtual Reality Resources: An Application of the Holographic Model in the Treatment of Parkinson's Disease

The present study tested the Oriented Dialogue (OD) technique added to virtual reality (VR) resources in a treatment of Parkinson's disease. Originally, OD consists of the patient mind conditioning through a specific dialog, performed by the physician in charge of the treatment, which gives a new consciousness to the patients about their disease, contributing to cerebral neuroplasticity increasing and consequently to symptoms' relief. Currently, OD is part of a short video which allows the patients to experiment an immersion inside of knowledge about their diseases and teaches them how to make the dialog for each case. The patients usually use a VR headset, but video can be showed in a television for those who do not feel comfortable with 3D effects. For the present case of Parkinson's disease, a 36-year-old woman with severe tremor symptoms, vocal hypotonia, and inability to perform fine movements - such as doing nails, writing, and change facial expression - was treated by a multidisciplinary team, including general practitioner, speech therapist, neurologist, orthopedist, and physiotherapist. In addition to the conventional protocols, the professionals used the combination OD/VR during medical appointments and oriented the patient to daily repeat the technique at home. After 90 days, the patient reported improvement of 90% of the symptoms.
