Prevalence of cigarette and shisha smoking among high school adolescents and their impact on Health

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of cigarette and shisha smoking among high school adolescents and its harmful on health. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was carried out among 308 ninth and tenth class students at four public High schools of Taluka Qasimabad, District Hyderabad, Sindh, Pakistan from October 2019 to December 2019. The Participants were randomly selected. Data were collected using a predesigned paper-based questionnaire, and descriptive data were analyzed through SPSS 23. Results: We found cigarette smoking in 19.5% and shisha smoking in 5%. Most of them were males consuming cigarette and shisha smoking on routine basis as compared to female. There were harmful short-term effects on the health of participants, which led them to mental and physical disturbance.Conclusion: The prevalence of cigarette and shisha smoking abuse was found among high school adolescents, besides that most abusers instantly suffered in worst adverse health effects of cigarette and shisha smoking. It would be extremely beneficial to organize a campaign against smoking in high schools for awareness about cigarette and shisha smoking cessation.
