"LOOK, THE BLACK IS STILL ATREVIDE": RACISM AND GENDER VIOLENCE IN THE STORY "MARIA", BY CONCEICAO EVARISTO

The present work deals with an analysis of the short story Maria (2014), by Conceicao Evaristo, in which the objective is to investigate the racial and gender violence that affect the protagonist in her condition as a black woman. The study of the narrative brought to light the consequences of colonial education that conditioned and built a legacy of prejudice in Brazilian society. The character's experiences figure the relationship between race and gender, demonstrating how contexts of exclusion are fertile ground for the proliferation of violence against blacks, especially women. In the theoretical support, predications of Postcolonial, identity and gender theories were used, especially regarding the focus on the black person. Assumptions of the following authors stand out: Grada Kilomba, Pierre de Bourdieu, Lelia Gonzalez, Laurentino Gomes.
