Quality control and evaluation in scientific publications: types of plagiarism conduct in Human Sciences journals

The use of text comparison software is part of the editorial processing routine as a tool that helps combat misconduct such as plagiarism. The research analyzed occurrences of plagiarism in a significant universe of articles from a given journal. The study investigated cases of plagiarism in submissions of original scientific articles, on the ScholarOne Manuscripts digital submission platform of the Boletim do Museu Paraense Emilio Goeldi. Ciencias. The analysis identified the types of plagiarism, in submissions referring to the period from 2016 to 2020. A quantitative approach was used, data collection on rejection decisions due to plagiarism, as well as a qualitative approach, when analyzing the literature on the subject with consultations carried out in the Portal de Periodicos Capes and in the electronic library Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO) (Brazil). Of the 532 submissions, there were 335 rejections, of which 314 cases are related to some form of plagiarism with a predominance of self-plagiarism. It is from the understanding of the study that maintaining scientific integrity is a challenge in the editorial process and that it is directly related to the verification of contents in the initial phase of submission.
