Formation of Mg-Al LDHs coating by hydrothermal treatment on laser remelting pretreated AZ31 magnesium alloy for enhanced corrosion resistance

Magnesium (Mg) alloys have the potential for widespread application in aerospace components, communications, biomaterials and electronic industry due to their low density, high thermal conductivity and outstanding mechanical properties (strength and toughness). However, the poor anti-corrosion property of Mg alloys strictly hinders their applications in practice. Laser surface remelting (LSR) is an effective way to improve the corrosion-resistant of Mg alloys, but it is easy to form micropores in the process of laser processing. Therefore, in this work, we combined LSR and layered double hydroxides (LDHs) film to further improve the corrosion resistance of Mg alloys. The results show that the composite films greatly improve the anti-corrosion of Mg alloys, which provide a guidance for the designing of corrosion-resistant coating on Mg alloys.
