摘要
Complete nitrogen removal from sewage has been a challenge faced by wastewater treatment plants. The electro-membrane bioreactor (EMBR), the combination of the electrochemical process, biological degradation, and membrane separation, is one such technology that has the potential to achieve complete nutrient removal. This review comprehensively presents the influential factors and mechanisms related to nitrogen compounds removal in EMBR, while presenting a discussion about them. The EMBR operation under optimal conditions enriches microorganisms associated with biological nitrogen removal, improving nutrient removal. The application of electric current can promote the electrostimulation of bacteria and enzymes, increasing microbial activity. In addition, intermittent application of electric current provides alternation of anoxic and aerobic conditions. Electrode material might also influence the nitrogen removal process. Additional tanks and supporting media have been widely applied to create an anoxic environment. Furthermore, the autotrophic hydrogenotrophic denitrification and anammox process can effectively improve denitrification. The review also addresses knowledge gaps, insights, and research directions for overcoming the challenges for technology advancement.
