Effects of User Equipment and Integrated Access and Backhaul Schedulers on the Throughput of 5G Millimeter-Wave Networks

5G requires much higher data transmission rates to achieve the required quality of service of the envisioned use cases, such as the enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) and massive machine-type communication. The use of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) bands is one of the solutions adopted by 5G to achieve the needed data rates, however, high frequencies are prone to higher path losses and signal obstruction by obstacles. Thus, a higher density of deployed base stations is required, which is limited by the provision of backhaul: there are physical and economical limitations to connecting optical fibers to all base stations in a dense deployment. Therefore, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) is proposed, featuring the allocation of base station transmission resources for backhaul sharing. This article investigates the performance of different schedulers on the user equipment throughput in 5G mm-wave scenarios using IAB.
