摘要
The paper uses the political potential of perfectionism, developed in Emerson, Thoreau, and Cavell, to think of democracy as a form of life. Through an analysis of Emerson's concept of self-reliance, it is made clear that democracy as a form of life depends on the possibility that any arbitrary person can express her experiences in a voice in which resistance and dissent manifest themselves. This voice, which is distinguished from the individualism of liberalism, is discussed as an agency of a skeptical objection that keeps the "we" of the democratic form of life open to criticism.
