Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a frequentcomplication of chronic liver disease. It is definedas a characteristic functional and reversiblealteration of the mental state, due to impaired liverfunction and/or increased portosystemic shunting. In the brain of HE patients, neurons appearmorphologically normal, but astrocytes show signsof Alzheimer type Ⅱ degeneration, i. e. nuclearenlargement, peripheral margination of chromatin
