THE TEACHING OF PREVENTIVE MEDICINE AND PUBLIC HEALTH

Under an ABMAC travel grant,the writer had the opportunity,in1947,to visit a cross section of medical and public health schools in the United States.He had the chances of attending seminars,classes,con-ferences and other teaching activities.The personal talks and discussionswith the professors and other members of the teaching staffs were special-ly valuable to him.Also,there were interviews with the deans and pro-fessors of other departments;their viewpoints were often very illumina-tive from another angle.These first hand observations brought him incontact with the various methods,approaches and theories,and conse-quently different contents,in the teaching of preventive medicine andpublic health.This paper is a report or a digest of the,viewpoints and discussionsand of the current literature on the subject against a background of thewriter’s own experience and observations.Chinese conditions are bornein mind so that the proposals and recommendations,it is hoped,will bea useful reference to his Chinese colleagues.
