China is facing the challenge of water resources shortage. With the economic and social development in China, the drinking water shortage occurs in many places, while lack of adequate drinking water is especially serious in the rural remote, poorly off and minority area of the middle and western China. Up to the end of 1999, there were still 50.2 million rural residents lacking of adequate drinking water.
