In publishing the "Selected Papers" of Norbert Wiener (1894-1964), thefounder of cybernetics, the American Society for Industrial and Applied Mathe-matics (Philadelphia) wrote in 1964 that "Professor Norbert Wiener believedthat significant research topics are to be found in the ’crack’ between two fields"[1].
