1992 marked the 500th anniversary of the first of Chri-stopher Colmbus’four voyages of discovery and conquestto the new world—America.Of course,America was nei-ther“new”nor his goal.He was planning to China(Cathey)and instead ran into the continents of North and SouthAmerica,and their surrounding islands,which were previ-ously unknown to Europeans.
