The zero-crossing analysis method which was originally studied by Rice has been applied tomany signal-processing tasks.In this paper,the zero-crossing analysis method is applied to seismicsignal processing technique and a method of time domain analysis of acoustic emission prior toearthquakes is presented,based on the statistical properties of the zero-crossing of the acousticalsignal.The expected number of the zero-crossing within a given time interval may be regardedas spectral parameter of the acoustical signal.The time-variant structure of ambient acoustic emis-sion can be analysed by use of this method.Mathematical description of the zero-crossing analysisand the primary experimental results are given in this paper.
