PROGRESS AND DEVELOPMENT OF SURGERY IN CHINA

On the occasion of the opening ofthe Eighth National Congress of Surgeryof the Chinese Medical Association,allow me on behalf of the Presidium ofthe Congress and myself to give you allour heartiest greetings.I avail myselfof this opportunity to speak on 2 ques-tions:firstly,the progress of surgery inChina in the past 3 years;and,secondly,the principles guiding the developmentof surgery in China.PROGRESS IN PAST 3 YEARSThree years have elapsed since theSeventh National Congress of Surgeryheld in Chengchow,Honan.Duringthis period,we have held symposia onvarious surgical problems in differentparts of the country and have system-atically summed up our experiences,reaffirmed our positive results and dis-cussed our unsolved problems.Thesesymposia have effectively helped to im-
