Sustainable Development Strategy: An Inevitable Option for China in the 21st Century

Ⅰ. A cautious Choice In the 21st century, China has to face the unavoidable and serious challenges coming from the collision between the environment stress and national development, such as the pressure exerted by the three peaks of the population explosion (the total amounts of national population, people to get job and the elders) across the land, the predatory exploitation of natural resources and deterioration of the ecosystem, the swift progress in the national modernization program overlapped by soaring industrialization and drastic urbanization and the worsening imbalance among regional economies. Any of these can form a bottleneck for China’s development.
