长城(公元前220年和公元1368年—公元1644年)中国——The GreatWall of China was built to link existing fortifications(防御工事)into a unit-ed defense system and better keep invading Mongol tribes out of China.It is the largest man-made monument ever to have been built and it isdisputed that it is the only one visible from space.Many thousands ofpeople must have given their lives to build this colossal(庞大的)construc-tion.
