It was found that in a transverse magnetic field the resultant erosion pattern generatedby the mumber of successive arcs on the same cathode surface forms an angle (erosion angle)with a fixed trigger site as the apex of this angle. Moreover the magnitude of this angle isdependent on the applied magnetic field and independent of the are current (up to 70A). Amodel for the erosion angle of vacuum arcs in a transverse magnetic field is developedd. Theerossion angle as a function of the external magnetic field calculated according to this modelagrees quantitatively with the reported experimental results.
