In this paper,we suggest a theory to describe the phenomena which arise from theinteraction between semiconductor and coherent light.Our work is presented in threeparts.In the first part,we neglect the interaction between the electrons and investigatethe problem in the framework of single-electron band theory.The intense light fieldinduces not only interband transitions,but also intraband transitions of electrons andholes respectively in the conduction and valence bands.Hence our system is differentfrom the ordinary inhomogeneously broadened two-level system.For our treatmentwe have adopted the“space translation approximation”,i.e.the approximate steadystates of the carriers moving within their resoective bands under the action of the light
