Digitized Radio-over-Fiber Transmission System Based on ADPCM Compressed Encoding

Digitized radio-over-fiber (DRoF), due to its high signal fidelity, has emerged as a promising solution, but its low spectral efficiency is a technical bottleneck. In this paper, a novel DRoF transmission scheme based on adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPCM) is proposed and a proof-of-concept experiment is conducted to verify the feasibility. Experimental results show that millimeter-wave radio frequency (mmWave RF) signals with a bandwidth of 600MHz and a carrier frequency of 28GHz, under 3, 4, 5, and 6-bit quantization, result in recovered quantized signal-to-noise ratio (QSNR) of 17.36dB, 23.11dB, 27.66dB, and 30.51dB after transmission through an On-Off Keying (OOK) intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD) optical link. These values represent improvements of 7.23dB, 6.94dB, 5.48dB, and 2.3dB, respectively, compared to the traditional pulse-code modulation (PCM) scheme.
