First report of torenia root rot caused by oomycete species

Torenia plants grown in a domestic garden in Gifu Prefecture, Japan, had wilting symptoms; plants with root rot died in July and August 2016. Three oomycete strains were isolated from the rotted roots and were highly virulent on two torenia cultivars. From morphological characteristics and a BLAST search using the DNA sequences, the strains were identified as Globisporangium heterothallicum, G. irregulare, and Pythium myriotylum. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a blight disease of torenia caused by Globisporangium and Pythium species; we propose the name negusare-byo in Japanese for the disease.
