Dr. William McDade addresses the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement at the Frank Michota Memorial Lecture on the subject of disparities in health care impacting underrepresented minorities (URM). He notes that equitable health care results in better health outcomes for patients, and is part of quality health care. He describes how workforce diversity matters to the elimination of healthcare disparities. In his role as the Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer for the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), he has a unique opportunity to address these disparities through changes in ACGME policy that promote the recruitment and retention of URM in medicine and he outlines policies and strategies to address this issue.
