A Comparison of the Utilization of Student Health Services at a Public United States University by Age of Students

University enrollment of nontraditional and older students has increased in the United States in recent years. Studies investigating utilization of student health services (SHS) in older students are lacking. This study compared SHS utilization of students by age group with a focus on older students at a large state university in California. A retrospective chart review was conducted for 2015-2019. Descriptive statistics compared frequencies of and reasons for SHS visits for traditional, nontraditional, and older students. Older students utilized SHS less than both traditional and nontraditional students. Preventive services were the most common reasons for visits. Mental health service utilization increased each year. Older students utilizing SHS were mostly female, ages 50-54 years, and White. Targeted interventions may increase SHS utilization in older, male, and non-White students. Studies investigating the health needs of older students are required to provide optimal health services to this population.
