Cloud Iridescence Reported in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty

In this study we have explored the five-colored clouds that appear in the records through a literature study of the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty by comparing the records to optical characteristics of cloud iridescence. Most historical records are conceptual and largely qualitative, making scientific analysis difficult. However, it was found that the records, especially those that appear in the Annals of King Sejo and King Yejong, match the characteristics of iridescent clouds. Although objective records of the five-colored clouds in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty are very limited, a more accurate understanding will be possible through a review of various literature sources in the future. In addition, interdisciplinary research is necessary to reflect the political nature of the five-colored clouds.
