摘要
Type 1 diabetes, which results from the autoimmune destruction of beta-cells, is a serious disease, not only because of the debilitating late complications that lead to a shortened life expectancy, but also because of the high daily burden placed on patients and their families by the demands of insulin therapy. Despite intensive biochemical, immunological, epidemiological and clinical research over the past 100 years, the etiology of type 1 diabetes is still largely unclear. It appears to be the result of a complex interplay between genetic predisposition, the immune system and environmental factors.
