Cable-stayed bridges, celebrated for their architectural elegance and efficient design, are notable landmarks worldwide. However, they face structural challenges, such as sensitivity to asymmetric loads and the need for significant components. This paper explores a novel approach that uses intersecting cable stays and replaces traditional stiffening girders with strings. This bridge model, with intermediate pylons connected by a pre-tensioned steel string, intersecting cables, and rigid supports, shows promise in improving load distribution and reducing material use. These potential benefits for managing asymmetrical loads. An experimental study on this new cable-stayed string bridge model assesses its response to symmetric and asymmetric loads, focusing on stress levels and deformations. © 2024, VDI Fachmedien GmBH & Co.
