Sensors based on impedance measurement are the most common humidity meters; offering a balance between accuracy and cost. However; their accuracy is significantly impacted by limited sensitivity and resolution in low capacitance measurements; as well as the sorption properties of the hygroscopic dielectric. These factors increase hysteresis; long-term drift; and other reproducibility sources. Both science and manufacturers strive to minimize these effects. Problems arise when an insufficiently accurate reference meter; also based on impedance measurement; is used for evaluation; resulting in highly correlated measurements and underestimated effects. Literature suggests estimation errors can reach several percentage points of relative humidity; which exceeds the target uncertainty of less than 1% for the best hygrometers. The lack of analyses with more stable; uncorrelated references hinders realistic progress assessment and manufacturer specifications. This article presents an analysis of over 100 impedance hygrometers of varying quality; calibrated over 17 years. A dew point meter; traceable to the national humidity standard and significantly more stable and accurate; was used for reference. The results offer a more realistic understanding of the impact of hysteresis; and reproducibility issues. © 2024 Electrotechnical Society of Slovenia. All rights reserved;
