The purpose of this study is to be able to predict the burning behavior in a whole train carriage in case of fire using the properties obtained from small-scale material burning tests. In this paper; prediction of the burning behavior of a train seat was focused on as a first step. To predict the heat release rate (HRR) during a train seat burning test; the spread behavior of the pyrolysis region on the seat was modelled. And inputting the data from small-scale material burning tests to this model; the HRR was calculated. The calculations using this model were made against three different types of train seats. Comparing the HRR curves from the seat burning tests and those from the calculation of the model; this model could estimate the overall trend of the HRR of the tests. © 2024 Japan Association for Fire Science and Engineering;
