摘要
One of the most important developments in the semiconductor industry in the 1980s was the rise of the Japanese manufacturers: Japan's production value exceeded that of the United States. The effects were not limited to semiconductor manufacturers, however, as the same reversal also occurred in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment market. This article compares Japanese and U.S. companies in the field, summarizes the state of penetration of the Japan market by non-Japanese manufacturers, and reports on recent trends among foreign capital firms active in Japan. At the same time, it probes for a way of coexistence, providing for the mutual prosperity of semiconductor manufacturing equipment firms in both the U.S. and Japan.
