An analysis based on the Darcy formula for flow in pipes shows that the critical feature leading to an increase or decrease in the discharge through a surcharged pipe is the ratio of the hydraulic gradient to the pipe slope. Considerable differences from the pipe-full discharge may be expected in conditions typical of urban drainage systems, especially in pipes of low slope.
