Functionality and services of transport protocols in a local area network (LAN) environment are illustrated; a look at the evolution of transport protocols for LANs and WANs (wide area networks) serves to uncover differences and common aspects. Important existing LAN transport protocols as well as standardization efforts are described. Finally, the feasibility and limits of LAN/LAN and LAN/WAN integration are discussed. © 1987 De Gruyter Oldenbourg. All rights reserved.
