User demand for higher yields has prompted many large semiconductor manufacturers to incorporate tape and reel systems into their surface mount component assembly processes. Quality assurance programs, vision inspection, and ESD protection are discussed. But small to mid-size component manufacturers often find difficult to justify the necessary staff, taping supplies and capital equipment. However, with more end users of surface mount technology requiring that surface mount devices (SMDs) be provided on tape and reel, component manufacturers are looking for ways to enjoy the benefits of tape and reel systems without a large capital outlay. In many cases the answer is to subcontract to a tape and reel service company.
