Two-thirds of all steel wire is now made by companies which purchase rod and draw wire for their own use or resale. This trend has heightened interest in steel rod - the starting material for wire making. The author reviews the types of steel rod used to make wire, product applications, recent technological developments in the rod-making process, factors affecting ″make-or-buy″ decisions and what to specify when ordering wire.
