Metallographic investigations indicate that during hot working metals can soften not only by means of dynamic recovery but also through recrystallization. A simple model for the calculation of stress-strain curves is proposed. It contains the assumption that the flow stress depends solely on the average dislocation density and that the latter is uniquely governed by the competing processes of creation of dislocations through deformation and their annihilation through recrystallization. The theoretical results are compared with experimental ones and the influence of different experimental parameters is discussed. Similar theoretical approaches followed by others are reported.
