Continuous automatic measurement of particulate emissions in stacks

This paper discusses how monitoring should be carried out in ducts and chimneys. The monitoring of the adverse effects of inert particulate emissions can be carried out by well tried instruments. Two types, namely the opacimeter and the impacimeter, are needed for a full cover of the particle size range and of the effects produced. Problems still exist with the appropriate sampling of particulate emissions but methods are being developed which should improve the situation. There is no effect of particulate emissions which is a function of mass burden alone; nevertheless, since this is of importance in the legal or traditional control of particulate emissions, it may be possible to deduce its value with reasonable accuracy by combining opacimeter and impacimeter readings in a simple formula.
