An irradiation facility has been designed and built for the storage and handling of radioactive substances up to two million Curies of cobalt-60 at Haan, West Germany. The facility involved planning, construction and preparation of a radiation shielding plant of a completely novel concept in design. The article discusses various aspects of the design and construction of the concrete building, including wall thicknesses and shapes, earth shielding, ventilation, source pool, and door systems.
