This paper investigates the effect of wall mass on the space heating and space cooling requirements of residential buildings. Six test buildings were extensively instrumented and subsequently exposed to outdoor climatic conditions near Washington, DC. No reductions in space heating requirements attributed to wall mass were observed during the winter heating season when some space heating was provided each hour of the test.
