Optimization of machine tools using a virtual prototype. High productivity and precision are the key success factors that force machine tool builders to constantly enhance the motion dynamics of their products. This article presents a concept for the methodical application of different engineering tools (CAE-tools) throughout the design process. While FEM analysis and optimization tools for example support the mechanical design of the frame structure a mechatronic model is needed to evaluate the interactions between mechanical, electrical and software components. Based on a multibody approach the dynamic motion behavior can be predicted including the stiffness of the frame structure, the dynamics of the feed drives, the NC motion path interpolation, the axis controller and the machining process.
