The effect of radiation curing on solvent swell, mechanical, and aging properties of chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) was investigated using the pure polymer and polymer formulations containing crosslinking coagents, dehydrochlorination stabilizers, and antioxidants. Irradiation was carried out at 10 and 20 Mrads under nitrogen or air atmospheres. The mechanical properties of the radiation cured CPE formulations are as good as or better than similar formulations cured by peroxides. In all cases the solvent swell properties and the mechanical properties were influenced by the radiation dose but not by the radiation atmosphere.
