Passenger trains can be good business

There are concerns over the profitability of passenger trains in light of the increasing number of motorway construction projects around the UK. The revenue shortfall for passenger trains is further aggravated by the elimination of the government subsidy for 10 of the 25 franchises that operate under the former British Rail services. In this regard, the profitability of both inter-city and commuter routes is examined, given that UK franchises must meet in full the cost of maintaining and renewing the railtrack infrastructure.
