摘要
The facility, with 87 ovens (20 ft high), is built on a 277-acre island which lies midstream in the Ohio river west of Weirton. The battery was the first full-size facility in the U. S. to be equipped with the AISI system which controls emissions during the charging operation by maintaining negative oven pressure. Self sealing doors and automatic equipment for cleaning oven doors and door jambs are also designed to reduce emissions. The plant was also the first facility to use a completely enclosed pushing system and a continuous quenching system. To eliminate discharge of objectionable effluents into the Ohio river, a biological oxidation system is installed to remove phenol and other chemical compounds from the plant's waste water. A built-in process water recirculation system provides maximum water conservation.
