摘要：

The conventional Bayer-Hall-Heroult process of aluminum extraction accounts for almost all the primary aluminum production in the world. The Hall-Heroult electrolytic extraction has many inherent drawbacks: (i) The process is energy intensive (ii) Requires high purity alumina (iii) High capital investment and operating cost (iv) creates environmental pollution. An overview is presented of these problems and potentially new processes offering improved energy efficiency are discussed briefly.
