A strip temperature in a hot mill is simulated from a heating furnace to a coiler with a model evaluating heat transfers theoretically. The temperature model consists of radiative and convective heat transfers, cooling by a spray, heat generations by rolling, and cooling by work rolls. These phenomena have been theoretically formulated, and then the equations were modified by tests and operation data. The temperature distribution in a strip is calculated by solving an equation of conduction of heat. A computer program based on this model represents the strip temperature with reasonable accuracy. A temperature model provides a tool for decision of operation factors and design specifications, such as slab size, pass schedules, rolling power and a furnace capacity.
