Deep basements, tunnels, etc. are being widely used in the construction of industrial and public buildings. Almost all these underground structures are erected by opencut mining followed by construction of fills by various means of compacting local or borrow soil materials. Retaining walls, which resist earth pressure exerted by backfills, can be considered a safety feature of the underground part of a structure. To design retaining walls, one must know the strength characteristics of a remolded soil. Experiments have been carried out at the Scientific-Research Institute of Bases and Underground Structures to study the effects of the disturbance of the structure on the changes in their strength characteristics and to prepare tables of normalized and calculated values of unit cohesions and angles of internal friction of remolded clays.
