In 1983 the five prototypes of the class 120 of the German Federal Railway have met the planned objective. The starting and traction behavior at high speeds have been demonstrated during many test runs under difficult conditions. The high power factor and the resulting favorable conditions were confirmed. The amount of reclaimed energy due to the regenerative braking has been determined. The reliability of the five utilized locomotives increased. Since September 1983 the tractive units of class 120 need no more relief locomotives. Since this time performance between two failures increased to more than 400,000 km.
