Fluidized bed combustion of solid fuels is recognized to have a number of potential advantages over suspension burning or burning on grates. These advantages, on the whole, derive from the effectiveness with which chemical reactants in the gaseous fluidizing medium can be brought into contact with the bed solids. This paper describes a development of fluidized bed combustion technology which permits independent control of reaction conditions, heat transfer rate, and the temperature of the heat receiving surface. This may offer significant advantages for a number of heating applications.
