The effects on engine performance of PSZ (Partially Stabilized Zirconium) coating on a swirl combustion chamber surface are investigated. The test results show that PSZ coating on the surface of the swirl chamber is an effective measure for reducing the heat transferred to the cooling water. A 2 percent reduction in the fuel consumption has been obtained with a 1 mm PSZ coating. Improvements on the performance of the engine are achieved when the parameters of the combustion system are adjusted so as to meet the requirements of the combustion under higher temperatures resulting from the thermal barrier coating.
